Since the first Assassination Diary was launched we have been pointed to a number of incidents in Cote d’Azur that hints as Maddy’s authenticity.

Does she exist? Did she exist?

'French Connection' gangster claims wrong man convicted in Riviera murder

A retired top "French Connection" gangster claims the wrong man has been convicted of one of the Cote d'Azur's most notorious murders involving the glamorous heiress to a Riviera casino empire. (Was this the Bishop’s wife?)

Russian mafia taking over French Riviera

Mafia kingpins from the former Soviet Union have moved into the French Riviera and are taking over with “quasi-military” precision. (we know The Bishop is of Eastern European origin!)

“Everything from burglary and money laundering to vice is controlled by the Mob from former Communist countries,” said one police officer, “They’re into everything, from the Russian prostitute rings in resorts like Cannes and St Tropez to gassing tourists in their villa and stealing everything they’ve got,” said the police officer.

Extract from The Bishop: I took the paper straight to the best brothel I knew and whispered ‘Where do I find him?’ to my favourite lover. She froze and hissed, ‘He

owns this place but he’s dangerous. He kills women he doesn’t like.’

Alain Bauer, a French criminologist, said: “This is one of the best structured criminal organisations in Europe, with a quasi-military operation”.

The scene typically unfolds this way: two or three individuals wearing ski masks burst into the cité, armed with Kalashnikovs. They approach their target, unload a full round of bullets at him, and leave as quickly as they arrived.

Extract from The Bishop:The three men, covered from head to toe in black, fully masked and carrying light machine pistols, reached the door and produced a key.

Laurent Laubry, a representative of the police union Alliance, said that many of the gang members were heavily armed ex-soldiers from Soviet regions such as Chechnya.

Extract from The Bishop: I rolled all three bodies over twice……I pulled off their masks. All had exactly the same face; high cheek bones, olive skin and black eyes……They could have been Russian, Israeli, Chechen,

“Bosses are now based here permanently, with foot soldiers working for them, often flying in for set periods before returning home with their profits in cash. The numbers really are unprecedented at the moment.”

Another investigator, from the judicial police in Nice, told Le Figaro newspaper that he had recently been involved in the arrests of two eastern Mafia chiefs.

“One of them is involved in a vast money laundering operation in Spain and waiting to be extradited”, said the officer. “The other is suspected of masterminding the assassination of another rogue Georgian, and he organised a very violent settling of accounts, worthy of an action film, in a flat in Nice.”

Extract from The Bishop: Pulling her body across I laid it alongside……arranged them with arms crossed over chests. I stood back to admire my handiwork. A good looking couple joined in death. Quite medieval.

In June, Giuseppe Falsone, a leading Sicilian Godfather, was arrested in Marseilles after a decade on the run. He was believed to have had plastic surgery and was using false identification while continuing to coordinate criminal activity, said local police.

He was the boss of bosses that no one thought existed. (Could describe The Bishop!)

The existence of a supreme boss indicated that, contrary to previous intelligence, mobsters were organised in a pyramidal structure similar to that of the Sicilian Mafia.

Extract from The Bishop: ‘You may or may not know that I am a financier of many worldwide deals. Some things I finance are not popular with certain political groups or countries so I run risks a normal financier would never need to guard against.’

The crime syndicate’s size and the scope of its connections across Italy and beyond suggest it is far from defeated. Authorities in the south of France warned that the notoriously violent group, which sprang to public attention after the murders of six members outside a pizza restaurant, was colonising France’s Côte d’Azur, with bases in Nice and Menton.
